Knucklas Viaduct, Mid-Wales
The stone pillars on this ancient railway were slowly being eroded away due to water damage. Without any action being taken, this scenic landmark and important rail link for the heart of the Welsh countryside would have eventually crumbled away. ELS were brought in to install a waterproofing system to ensure this would never occur. Due to the fact the Knucklas Viaduct is part of an active rail line, ELS were only given 60 hours in which to line the entire viaduct, which is over 250 metres long, and up to 5 metres wide.
The viaduct was lined with a 3-layer composite made up of a 1000g geotextile, a 1.5mm oil resistant PVC lining membrane, and another 1000g geotextile layer. PVC coated aluminium flashing was used to seal the membrane to the sides of the bridge. |
| ELS successfully ensured the architectural heritage of the Mid-Wales countryside was preserved. Waterproofing projects undertaken by ELS are not just limited to bridge deck waterproofing. Any structure in need of protection from water, or even chemical erosion can be, and is, lined by ELS. |
