Case Study - New tertiary lagoon holding sludge

Baffle curtains are widely used in reservoirs, but also occasionally lagoons, to ensure a constant flow of water throughout the water storage area.

The baffle curtains, anchored to the floor, ceiling (see diagram) or both, prevent both water stagnation and sediment deposit, by forcing water circulation in a pre-determined passage.

ELS have installed a great number of baffle curtains, including on a project at Dronfield Water Treatment Works.

This project involved ELS installing a lining system to a new tertiary lagoon holding sludge. Two baffle curtains were then installed into the lagoon, using an innovative and individual in-house design concept, unique to this project.  The lagoon itself was lined using a 1.0mm HDPE Lining Membrane, with a 300g Geotextile Protection Layer. The baffle curtains, which were supported from the roof of the lagoon using the new system, were 1.0mm Polypropylene, fixed with stainless steel battening. The total area of the lagoon was around 1,800m2, with the project a complete success, highlighting both the flexibility and expertise of ELS.
